يوم قرّر وزير الصحة وائل أبو فاعور إقفال 96 مركز تجميل في جبل لبنان والبقاع، شعرت بفرحٍ ممزوج بالحيرة بسبب تجارب واستنتاجات شخصيّة استغرقني تكوينها سنوات طويلة. لا أخفي أني ما زلت أرتاد هذه المراكز من وقت إلى آخر في زيارات محدّدة الهدف تمرّنت على تقليصها بعد إتمامي العشرين من عمري، وهي اليوم في طور الاختفاء.
بالطبع لست أدعو إلى القضاء على هذه المراكز، فقط أفضّل أن تتغيّر تسميتها وخدماتها تدريجياً لتناسب رؤًى وأولويات جديدة آمل أن تتبلور مع الوقت بموازاة تغيير المرأة لنظرتها إلى نفسها وجسمها، فتتحوّل زيارتها من فعل كره للذات إلى فعل محبّة.
وفي الوقت ذاته، دفعني القرار الوزاري إلى التفكير في أخصائيات التجميل والعاملات اليافعات اللواتي التقيتهنّ ولم يكنّ بالضرورة يمتلكن الحرفيّة والتراخيص اللازمة لمحلاتهنّ... ماريا التي لفظتها كلّ المؤسسات التربوية الفاسدة فالتحقت بقطاع التجميل، ألين التي ضنّت عليها الحياة بفرص معيشية بديلة، ستيفاني التي أبدعت في فنون التبرّج والتزيين، مايا التي أعالت زوجاً وثلاثة أطفال (ودمّمتني بالملقط)، الفراشة سينتيا ويدها الخفيفة، موني الطموحة التي صَعُب على زبوناتها التكيّف مع يدها السمراء رغم توسّلاتهنّ إليها، حلّقت ووسّعت أعمالها (بعد أن حرقتني بالشمع)، وغيرهنّ كثيرات انتقل عدد منهنّ حديثاً إلى عالم التجميل والليزر. وكانت الكارثة. فإلى جانب جهودهنّ الغفيرة في خرق العدو، أي الشعر "الدخيل" على جسم المرأة تبعاً للثقافة السائدة، خرقت هؤلاء العاملات سوق أطبّاء/طبيبات الأمراض الجلدية وأطبّاء/طبيبات التجميل. تجاوزن الخطّ الأحمر. وكانت الصرخة. فكان السؤال.
وجدت نفسي أطرح سؤالاً ساذجاً: هل الشعر مرض جلدي ليتولّى مهمّة إزالته الأطباء والطبيبات ويحتكرونها/يحتكرنها؟ حسناً، هم/نّ مخوّلون/ات تولّي هذه المهمّة لأنهم/ن مختصّون/ات محترفون/ات، ولأنه لا يجدر لأيّ كان استسهال استخدام آلات خطيرة، والاستخفاف بصحّة الناس، والقيام ببعض المهام فقط لأنها رائجة وسهلة المنال إلخ. لكن "كايتي"، وهي عاملة مالكة مؤسّسة امتهنت استخدام الليزر، أخبرتني أنها تستأجر أحدث الماكينات من عدد من الأطباء ليوم أو يومين في الشهر، فلا تواجه أي مشكلة لأنها تتقاسم الأرباح معهم. أكثر من ذلك، تؤكّد لي ما سبق أن شاهدتُه، وهو أنّ العاملة التي تتحكّم بالماكينة في عيادة الطبيب/ة ليست طبيبة، بل مختصّة مثلها خضعت لجلسات تدريبيّة خاصّة. فلماذا كلّ هذا الغضب والاستشراس؟ "شاطرين بس علينا"، تقول كايتي. إذاً، المسألة ليست في أن ينفرد/تنفرد الطبيب/ة في استخدام الليزر لأنه أصلاً، وفي الكثير من العيادات، لا يلمس/تلمس الزبون/ة (المريض/ة ؟ )، وعادةً ما لا يحضر/تحضر جلسات "تقريع" الجسد. فلا شكّ في أنّ المشكلة أبعد من بضعة ممارسات غير مهنيّة أو غير مرخّص لها، إذ أنّ الأمور تتفاقم بسبب تنافس حادّ على من يحقّ له/ها درّ الأموال من استئصال الشعر وحشو الخدّين، بين الأطبّاء أنفسهم، وبينهم وبين العاملات في قطاع التجميل. ولا فائدة من إثبات استسهال الهجوم على الفئة الثانية في هذا الكباش، بالرغم من اقتراف الأولى تجاوزات وأخطاء كثيرة بحقّ النساء وصحّتهنّ ومظهرهنّ. يبقى أن لا تنزلق الأيدي إلى كباش كهذا. فالمعركة ليست حول رخصة أو مركز أو صلاحية فحواها محض تجاري بالنسبة للجهتَين، وإن كنتُ ميّالة إلى لوم الأطبّاء/الطبيبات بسبب موقعهم/نّ الذي يحتّم عليهم/نّ مسؤولية صحيّة وأخلاقية. المعركة تبقى ضد كل المنظومة المتحكّمة بأجسادنا، ومن ضمنها المعايير التي تملي علينا شكلها، وهندستها، وكمية الشعر المسموحة لكلّ سنتمتر مربّع على مساحتها.
وددتُ فقط لو لم تُطلق الصرخة من لسان وزير الصحة، أو الطرف المواجه له "الهيئة التأسيسية لنقابة خبراء وأصحاب مراكز التجميل"، بل من حناجر نساء غاضبات من تلاعب القطاعات التجارية التجميلية والطبية بأجسادهنّ. فعوضاً عن ذلك، رفع بعضهنّ شعار "التجميل من حقوق المرأة، لا تسلبوها إياه في عيدها"، أي اليوم العالمي للمرأة (لا تعليق). وددتُ لو أن النساء طالبن بإقفال مراكز تجميلية وطبيّة تضرّرن من أدائها أو حُرمن من حقوقهنّ العمّالية فيها، لكن عوضاً عن ذلك، أطللن علينا مع جاين نصّار بشعار "نعم لمراكز التجميل"، وكأنّهن أردن به اتّهام الوزير والمحافظ بالمسّ بمملكة أنثوية هنّ متمسّكات بها حدّ عدّها حقّاً نسائياً طبيعياً. تختلط المفاهيم ووقع المصطلحات على متلقيّها/اتها، فتُزجّ كلمات مثل "حقوق" ومناسبات مثل "يوم المرأة العالمي" في سياقات مختلفة ومتناقضة، وفي سجال تتعامل معه صاحباته كمعركة حقوقية، من أجل الحق في التجميل والحفاظ على أحد أهم المراكز التجميلية. أي موقف أمام هذه الخطوة؟ وهل يحقّ في المقابل لمستخدمي/ات اللغة الحقوقية ضمن تنظيمات واضحة الأطر، إسقاط مفرداتهم/نّ الحقوقية وفهمهم/نّ لمبادئها بشكل استثنائي وحصري على الفئات الاجتماعية كافة؟ لكن جديّاً، هل تقصد حاملات اليافطات أنّ هناك حقّ إنساني، أنثوي، في التجميل، وما ينتج عنه من تشويه في الكثير من الأحيان؟ أم هو الحقّ في العمل والحريّة في اختياره ما يقصدنه، ومن ورائه هو الخوف من فقدان الوظيفة ما يحرّكهنّ؟
لا أستسيغ إطلاق أحكام وإسقاط إجابات جاهزة، لكن أتمنّى أن يكون الخوف. أفضّل الخوف على "الحقّ في التجميل" الذي يوحي بوجود كائن فيه قبح ينتظر المعالجة، أو علّة تنتظر الإصلاح، أو نقصان ينتظر التعويض، أو فائض ينتظر الإبادة.
"حقّ" يذكّرنا أنّ النساء لا يزلن بعيدات كثيراً عن حبّ ذواتهنّ وأجسامهنّ.

“You have the right to stop taking this survey at any time without any penalties”… I read before I start taking a consumer survey… this is funny I think that they are reminding me of my right to my time and privacy, of my right to express my opinion about a product without any penalties… very funny I think… I want to thank them and let them know about all my stripped rights.

Maybe I should tell them that my government does not even protect my basic human right to safety, that there is no law to protect me from a husband who beats and rapes me… marriage is sacred and private they say… I chuckle.

Maybe I should tell them that my society is immune to sexual harassment against me, that it has become the norm for me to hear harassing comments as I walk the streets of Beirut. I should tell them that sometimes I feel threatened by these sexually harassing comments, that sometimes I am afraid when a man exposes himself to me on the corner of the street or in a taxi, that sometimes I run to the first man in uniform (a member of the darak or the amn 3am) to seek security only to have him shout: “I would like to lick your pussy”.

Maybe I should tell them that my years of education and hard work are not as valuable because I am a woman and not a man, that my value increases when I am taller and thinner, when I dress and act like a sex symbol as long as I keep my purity and virginity, and when I am younger and more attractive (Note: beauty is in the eye of the beholder so more attractive is used here based on Barbie standards with plastic surgery as a plus)

Should I tell them? Should I speak up? Or should I just repeat the slogans of inaction and helplessness that I hear: At least you are not in Iran or Saudi where you have to cover yourself up, at least you are not in Afghanistan where you cannot get an education, at least you are not oppressed in Lebanon?

I put my head down and decide to stay quiet and then I look at the survey again: “you have the right to stop taking this survey at any time”… I can’t help it, I hold my head high and shout: I need to speak up!

Me and a Gun #Jan14

In Tori Amos’ autobiographical song about surviving rape (“Me and a Gun” from her first album, Little Earthquakes, 1992), Tori talks abouther choice to wear a “slinky red thing,” and how women's susceptibility to rape is commonly perceived to have something to do with the way they dress or the places they frequent. Funny how, in the tragic story of the rape and murder of Miriam Ashkar in November, no one asked what she was wearing. Was it because, in this case, the perpetrator– a Syrian worker, all too neatly fit the sectarian demonization bill and so no further inquiry was necessary? Or, was it because she was on her way to pray in church in the early evening, her status as a “good girl” thus confirmed? What would the media have said if she were walking alone late at night, or from her boyfriend’s house? Some might have tried to shift the blame from her killer to Miriam herself, as if a woman could ever prepare for rape, or prevent it, or cause it to happen. What if Miriam were divorced or even, married? Then, the crime would pass from her own body to the honor of her husband. This is the Lebanon we live in today. It is a land where only virgins can be raped.

There is an old German saying that a woman’s place is “kinder, kuche, kirche.” (Children, kitchen, church.) It is not hard to see that this mentality is still alive and well in Lebanon. So, how is it that a woman is not safe from harm in any of these three places? (Neither when a child, at home, or on her way to church?) I am currently working on a paper on women’s role in religion in the pre-modern world. When you study history and scripture, you see that patriarchal attitudes towards women are never part of “history” or “tradition,” rather they are political tools that are deployed against women depending on political goals at the time. An example of this would be how American woman were asked to join the workforce during the 1940′s during the patriotic days of WWII only to be sent back to their homes in the 1950′s to breed the next generation of citizens to replace those killed in the war. This is similar to the status of Algerian women after the revolution who were asked to return to their kitchens after playing a vital role in the resistance rather than take up posts in a new post-colonial government. This is not all bad. If patriarchal attitudes are historical products of a time and place, this means that they can also be undone by direct political action. What if, in the spirit of Lysistrata, all wives of Lebanese politicians refused to have sex with their husbands until the new laws were passed? Nadine Labaki’s new film tries to make this point, although I doubt that Russian prostitutes are the answer.

It is to women, all of them, who suffer sexual harassment, abuse, domestic violence, rape and murder that our actions on January 14th should be dedicated, so that we don’t forget the terrible urgency of what we are doing. Lebanon currently has some of the most archaic rape laws in the world. We need new laws to create a safer world for all women residing in Lebanon, whether they are citizens, foreign domestic workers or visitors. And after the laws, we need the courage to enforce them and watch society change.

يحصل لنا كلنا

منذ سنوات عدة كان التطرأ الى موضوع الاغتصاب والتحرش الجنسي من المحرمات. فممنوع لفظ المفردات هذه في المنزل او في الشارع أو أمام الاصدقاء، لانها مواضيع “حساسة” تشكل فضيحة وعار على العائلة ومن المعيب جدا ان نتكلم عن وجودها كفتيات .

شخصيا، لم أكن أعلم انني في يوم من الايام سأتفوه بتلك المفردات أمام العلن او أسئل عنها حتى، فالطالما راودني شعور بثورة سنتفجر يوما ما داخلي، ولطالما آمنت بأني سأدافع عن جسدي وعن حقي بأن أعيش بسلام وأتكلم بحرية عن تلك المفردات الحساسة.

دائما، كنت احلم بان أعترف امام العلن انني تعرضت لتلك المفردات الممنوعة، وكنت من صغري أحثّ صديقاتي على التكلم عن معاناة المرأة في لبنان، لكن كما نعلم نحن نعيش في مجتمع مغلق، مقفل بمفتاح ذهبي خُبأ في مكان سري، لذا كنت دائما أُصَدُ من قِبَل صديقاتي وأُعتبر الفتاة الغريبة الاطوار .

منذ سنتان وجدت ذلك المفتاح الخاص بي، وبدأت بفتح الابواب التي تؤدي الى التحرر من هذا المجتمع، بحثت عن مجموعة تعنى بحقوق المرأة وبدأت اخلع تلك الابواب من مكانها، تعرفت على حقوقي المهدورة والمغتصبة من الدولة، تعرفت على البنود المركونة في زوايا القوانين التي ملأها الغبار واصبحت متعفنة لا احد ينظر اليها. قررت في سري ان أمسح الغبار عنها وأبدء من أعماقي، ومن ذكرياتي ومن نفسي أنا . فأرشيف الذاكرة مليء بالحوادث المناهضة لي كإمرأة، وضعت شريط الذاكرة أمامي وبدأت بعرض الصور الى العلن :

الرجل العجوز في كافيتيريا المدرسة الذي كان يلامس الفتيات عند الشباك، البائع في الدكان المركون تحت منزلنا والذي كان يتحرش جنسيا بالمراهقات وكان يهددهن بالفضيحة العظمى اذا اخبرن اهلهن. معاناة الشابات مع سائقي السيارات العمومية، الاب الذي كان يضرب إبنته بشدة بسبب تأخرها عن المنزل، الرجل الذي كان يضرب زوجته بوحشية ولا تزال حتى الان في منزله لانها تريد “السترة“، محاولات الاغتصاب، التحرش الجنسي ضمن العائلة… كل هذا حصل مع فتاة اعرفها حق المعرفة، واصبحت تعاني من فقدان الوعي، تخاف من مجتمعها ولا تجرأ ان تتكلم عن اي من تلك الحوادث المؤلمة التي مرت بها. من يحميها؟ من يسمعها؟ قالو لها في إحدى المرات ان تلجأ الى الشرطة، لكن طبعا طُردت حتى قبل ان تدخل، ظلت متكتمة واصبحت تعاني من مشاكل نفسية لا حل لها.

في الامس البعيد شهدت محاولة اغتصاب لفتاة أعرفها، كانت على وشك الدخول الى منزلها في وقت “مناسب” من الليل، وهوجمت من قبل شباب أرادوا إغتصابها، ولم يستطيعو فأبرحوها ضربا حتى عجزت عن الوقوف، ورفضت التوجه الى اقرب مخفر لانها تعلم بانهم سيهزأون بها وسيرفضون سماعها…

هؤلاء الفتيات وغيرهن الكثير، هن مدعوات نهار السبت الواقع في 14 كانون الثاني 2012، الى التحرك الذي تنظمه “المجموعة النسوية” الساعة 12 انطلاقا من الصنائع وصولا الى ساحة البرلمان، ليرفعن صوتهن ويصرخن من اعماقهن:

أولا للتخلص من عقدة السكوت. وثانيا للمطالبة بالأمن وبقوانين كافية تحمينا!

من المعيب ان نصل الى القرن ال 21 ولا نزال نطالب بحقنا بالعيش بأمان، لن يقفل فمنا ولن يسكتنا احدا بعد الآن، سنكسر تلك القيود ونسقط كل الاقنعة.

On Why We Are Demonstrating

I read an infuriating article today, a blog post that was so patronizing it made me feel sick to the stomach. The writer referred to our action as “delusional” and while he deemed our struggle as “righteous”, he did not see it going anywhere for the moment. But Behold! For his was kind enough to provide us with an alternative solution, with other priorities and other actions.

The author’s intention was probably not to minimize our struggle, or be patronizing or anything: he probably did not notice that his sickly sweet rhetoric merely felt like a paternalistic pat on the head, like someone telling you you’re cute but naïve. Like someone not really believing you had serious reasons to be angry and to demonstrate.

Which got me to think: what are we fighting for? Why are we demonstrating?

First and foremost, there’s of course the issue of rights. We are demonstrating because the state has duties towards us, obligations it has signed on in an International Convention (CEDAW), voluntarily binding itself to respect, protect and fulfill them, rights that we can see are not being respected, protected and fulfilled. Hence, by making ourselves heard we are simply putting into action our democratic rights. We are neither demonstrating because we are spoilt brats, nor because we don’t have anything else to do or because we are delusional naïve nymphs living in Lala land. Rather, our carefully thought-out collective action is our weapon to put our government in front of its obligations. Its obligations is our rights, and it is our responsibility to demand them, to claim them, for the shameful rape laws are not going to be cancelled by themselves; and neither is the Violence Against Women Bill ever going to materialize and be adopted out of thin air. We demonstrate because the numbers 478, 488 and 489 (criminal code provisions imposing higher sanctions on women found guilty of adultery than on men) 503, 504 and 522 (laws pertaining to rape) cannot be read without a shudder. We demonstrate because of the large Violence Against Women Bill-shaped gaping hole within the Lebanese legislative apparel. We demonstrate because religious authorities are playing deaf and blind to that very simple fact: there are women in Lebanon, and we are not walking wombs. Rather, we are human beings who saw evil, heard evil and witnessed you speak your evil.

So we’re taking to the streets, armed with an international Convention, armed with laws and principles and a whole set of values that we think are worth sharing. Several people and bloggers seem to think that we’re ahead of the game, that before obtaining a change in the laws we need to establish a civil state in Lebanon then we’ll be able to see what we can do about women’s rights. It’s the same old song: women are selfish for demanding what is theirs, they should wait until the whole system changes until we can tackle women’s rights. To which I answer 1) Women Won’t Wait 2) why not think of changes in laws with regards to women as an opening door to a wider change in the system? Advocating for women’s rights is advocating for a more egalitarian society, it doesn’t mean favouring one injustice over another. The way I see it, turning Lebanon into a civil state will take longer than adopting the Violence Against Women law: what are we supposed to do until we reach that point? Sit around and pray?

The demonstration however even goes beyond obtaining our rights. It has become a question of reclaiming our very streets, each corner of our city until we find that we can walk around without fear or of uneasiness because of stares, glares, insults, offensive comments or unwanted physical contacts that is just plain sexual abuse. We’re demonstrating now because our cup is full: we’re tired of unlit zawarib where even the less sporty of us turns into a sprint champion until we reach our cars, we’re tired of feeling as if we’d like our breasts to be invisible, we’re tired to be harassed just because we are women. By pounding the streets of Beirut we’re making a strong statement to those who would like to see us off them, tucked away in our homes that sometimes are more dangerous that battlegrounds, as if under house arrests: look at us, we’re women and human, we want our dignity and safety.

We’re demonstrating because this way we get to say our stories, with our words, our chants, our actions, with no self-appointed authority (religious or otherwise) telling us we’re asking too much, too soon, too aggressively.

Our bodies are ours, and no one but us gets to dictate what we should do with it or whom and when we decide to give it to. Our voice are ours too, and no one but us dictates when and how we should use it.

So on Saturday the 14^th, I will pick up my banner and I will shout for my rights until my voice gets hoarse. But I promise that if you see us on the streets, and still have questions, then I will use it to talk to you.

And maybe then, you’ll walk with me too.

How About We Listen to Sex Workers, For Once?

When I first listened to Morgane Merteuil, general secretary of the Syndicat du Travail Sexuel (STRASS) (French Union of Sex Work) commenting on the new project of law currently being examined in France to criminalize sex workers’ clients, I had to admit I was intrigued.

There she was, strongly condemning the prospective law, and she used an argument that stuck with me: We would like people to stop thinking of us as victims, as persons to be pitied, we are sex workers and our rights deserve to be respected. The current law in France makes prostitution legal but doesn’t regulate it, leaving sex workers with no adapted and appropriate legal protection to speak of, while pimping and soliciting are forbidden, leaving street sex workers in a great state of vulnerability. Merteuil based her statement on human rights, and more precisely, on the Declaration on the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe, a document signed by more than 200 sex workers and like-minded organisations. The declaration underlines the WHO and UNAIDS statements that criminalizing sex workers only drives the activity underground, allowing all kinds of violence and harmful practices on sex workers, preventing public health policies (especially with regards to HIV and AIDS prevention and STIs) to be correctly implemented. The message of the declaration is two fold: first, that sex workers are citizens and as such should be treated as equally before the law as the rest of the population, which is currently not the case, and that sex work is work and that as such, it should be regulated by labour laws.

The debate is being fiercely held in Europe as some feminist groups and anti-trafficking organisations support the abolitionist stance, stating that a body is not a good that can be sold, while other feminists and public health associations answer back that abolitionists make a confusion between trafficking and pimping networks and non forced prostitution, stating that their bodies is their own and that they should be allowed to do whatever they please with it.

Outside of the ownership of the body debate and whether it can be sold or not, the question that nagged me was the point of trafficked women forced into prostitution. Looking at it superficially, and when I heard Merteuil’s statement, I instinctively thought: very well for women who go freely into prostitution, but I bet the woman tricked into sex work will be glad her clients are prosecuted. Such a trail of thought lasted for just about long enough until I looked into the issue a little deeper and that discrepancies in the law and its application emerged. Indeed, foreign sex workers arrested for soliciting do not benefit from the same procedure as French ones or people holding a residency card, and the issue of their trials often results in them being re-conducted to their home country, where the vicious circle of trafficking can start all over again, or the result can even be a pure and simple interdiction to be on French territory. The same goes for several European countries such as Sweden. Besides, in France, a trafficked sex worker can only be seen as a survivor of trafficking if she cooperates with the police and denounces her pimp, which is basically conditioning a right to an informing system, something that might be very dangerous to do, pimps often threatening sex workers to attack and beat and rape them and their families back home. Sweden, one the first countries to criminalize sex workers clients, boasts that street based sex work has now decreased in half and that the country is not a destination for trafficked sex workers anymore: first of all, I’d like to know the percentage of clandestine sex work now taking place in the country, and I’m just wondering how exactly shifting the problem to another destination actually solves it.

People who freely go into prostitution and their claims are often dismissed because they’re seen as a privileged minority with no sense of the terrible realities trafficked sex workers have to face. However, such a statement is only made to silence their voices and is yet another product of a moralistic and judgmental stance. Rather, solidarity with trafficked women is high on their agenda, as exemplified by article 5 of the Declaration on the Rights of Sex Workers in Europe that stipulates at point 11 that ‘Measures should be taken to provide appropriate assistance and protection to victims of trafficking, forced labour & slavery like practices with full respect for the protection of their human rights. Provision of residency permits should be provided to ensure effective access to justice and legal remedies, including compensation, irrespective of their willingness to collaborate with law enforcement. Trafficked persons must not be returned to situations in countries that will lead to their re-trafficking or result in other harms’.

Protecting trafficked women from forced sex doesn’t reside in criminalizing clients or sex workers: if the primaries concerned, sex workers, tell us so, then it’s probably time we listen to them. Besides, criminalizing and preventing and outlawing will only worsen the already high rate of violence and murder sex workers have to face by making the whole industry go underground, allowing organised crime to take over. The issue of smuggling human beings under false pretence and trafficking is a global, systemic one: to efficiently tackle it, economic systems and policies have to be rethought, non-discriminatory policies, laws and procedures have to be put in place in all relevant countries to ensure an appropriate response respectful of each person’s human rights and broad campaigns have to be made available for victims to know where to safely seek help if they need it.

After all, I don’t know why I even pondered on the populist nature of the abolitionist law: I should have known, me the Lebanese whose country doesn’t have a proper legal regime regulating sex work, thus allowing horrific folders of rows and rows of women abused by their pimping networks for the sex tourist to choose from, these folders only the tip of the underground abusive sex industry iceberg.

The Occupy movement has got me thinking a lot about bodies. Bodies that occupy. Occupied bodies. Gendered bodies. Broken bodies. Some bodies. Any bodies. These bodies.

There is power in our bodies present. Sometimes I think the state just wants us to be records in their databases. Serial numbers, demographics. It is easier to catalog us when we are data entries. Absent. In our designated houses, our shopping malls, our rock concerts. Our bodies are only welcome when they’ve bought a ticket, crossed a checkpoint, or created a username. The state doesn’t want our bodies gathered randomly in public spheres. Only controlled in privatized venues. Organized bodies, civilized bodies. Bodies with IDs. Bodies on CCTV. Individual bodies. Shaved bodies, clothed bodies, starved bodies, branded bodies.

The power of our bodies is unleashed in occupying a space. Bodies that dance, bodies that squat. Tents and dirt: our bodies will sleep here. Blood and asphalt: our bodies will ache here. Vomit and cement: our bodies will leak here. Scars and skin: our bodies will strip here. Our bodies will sing here. Our bodies will scream here.

Our bodies on the street. The most real part of us. Not bar codes or credit card statements or social security numbers or avatars or profiles. But bodies. Bodies with hearts and lungs and people inside them. Feminine bodies, masculine bodies. Bodies that are in the wrong bodies. Colored bodies. Tired bodies. Bodies that take up space. Bodies that contaminate space. Space the state wants empty and clean and pure. Space that was never meant for too many bodies. Bodies they have no choice but to beat and trample and jail. Bodies they want to hurt just enough to make them go away. Not enough to kill. Just enough to drive back into houses and stores and classes and cubicles.

Such power in bodies coming out into the open. A sea of bodies. A mass of bodies. Bodies that bring chaos, bodies that won’t budge. This body. Some body. Every body. Your body. Occupy.

قصّة "هنا" أو كيف تم القضاء على "خالو نبيل"

“تعي نلعب طالعة يا نازلة خالو“، واحدة من العبارات البريئة التي كان نبيل يستعملها لينتهك حرمة أعضاء ابنة اخته الحميمة!

لم يكن لكلمة لعب معنىً اخراً، وغير بريء ل“هنا” ابنة الخمس سنوات. ولكن كان للّعب مع “خالو نبيل” طعم آخر. كان سرّياً، سريعاً، خاطفاً وخاصاً جداً. كانت “هنا”تظن انه يفضلها ويحبها اكثر من اي من بنات اخواته الاخريات. فهي لم تره يوما يقوم بدعوة اي منهن “للّعب”.كانت زياراته تكثر لبيتها في اوائل العطلة الصيفية حين تضطر والدتها للخروج صباحاً وتركها في عهدته لبضعة ساعات. بضعة ساعات لبضعة سنين كانت كافية لتجعل من طفولة “هنا” السعيدة حقبة سوداء.

كان لا بد “لهنا” ان تكبر يوماً وتدرك معنى الالعاب الممتعة التي تطورت من مداعبات خفيفة الى العاب مؤلمة، غالباً ما تتم في حضور والدتها والتي لم تلحظ اي تصرف غير مألوف. في السيارة، ““تعي قعدي حد خالو“، ليلاً“بالضيعة عند خالتو” حيث تجتمع العائلة للسهر ويفترش“السهيرة الارض ليلاً استعداداً “للترويقة العظيمة” صباحاً.لكن نبيل كان ينتظر فرصة كهذه ليمارس العابه مع هنا”النائمة بجنب امها”!

تمت “هنا” الثامنة من عمرها وحينها بدأت تستمع الى بعض الاحاديث الخاصة بين الفتيات في

صفها. وكل ما تمكن عقلها الفتي من فهمه ان القبلة على الفم “عيب كبير“. لم يدرك نبيل ان فعلاً بسيطاً كمحاولة تقبيل “هنا” على فمها قد يفضح امره. فهو قد سبق و“عاش حياته” في انتهاك اعضاء اعظم و اجلّ من الفم! فكيف لها ان تعلم الفرق؟

كانت مدرسة الراهبات هي من انقذ ما تبقى من براءة في طفولة “هنا”. لم يكن “خالو نبيل” من مناصري العلم و التعلّم واغفل ان المدرسة والطالبات الصغيرات وأحاديثهن السرية قد تعود عليه بالخسارة.

من المعروف عن هنا انها طفلة جميلة وجريئة. قررت هنا ان تخبر ابنة خالتها المفضلة “لجين”. بدأت“المراسلات السرية بين “عائشة بكار” و“برج البراجنة“. وتقرر بناء عليها ان تجتمع “هنا” و“لجين بفتيات العائلة وتحذيرهن من العاب خالو نبيل الغريبة والابتعاد عنه قدر الامكان. لكن اصرار خالو نبيل على تجريد“هنا” من عذريتها كلّفه الكثير. ففي ليلة افاقت على الم شديد في أسفل بطنها ووجدت أن يد خالو نبيل التي كانت يوماً مصدر لذة سرية أصبحت قاسية ومصممة على اقتحام “السيكليست“. ولحسن حظها أن“السيكليست” كان ضيقاً مما صعّب مهمة خالو نبيل ومنحها الوقت لتستنجد بأمها النائمة بقربها! يا لجرأة خالو نبيل ويا لجرأة كل متحرش حقير. فبالطبع كانت كلمته مقابل كلمة طفلة كان لها صديقاً خيالياً من مدة ليست ببعيدة، والسكوت عن فعلته إن فضح أمره، مقابل فضيحة بنت صغيرة وعائلة كبيرة في قرية صغيرة.

عندما أدركت “هنا” أن خالو نبيل لن يرتدع، قامت بدعوة “لجين” الى اجتماع طارئ صدر عنه قرار اخبار الوالدة والخالة “أم لجين“. تصورت الفتاتان أنها انتصرتا على خوفهما وعلى خالو نبيل. لكن ردة فعل الوالدة والخالة أتت مخالفة لتوقعات هنا ولجين والمنطق والدين والمجتمع والاخلاق. تقرر الاتي: عدم اخبار “أبو هنا” واعلام “الخال الكبير” بالأمر. وكان “الخال الكبير” ، أب لأربع بنات حينها، في حالة انكار أشد من “أم هنا” التي بدت هادئة كأن شيئاً لم يكن. وقرر “الكبير” أن يطلب من خالو نبيل عدم الاقتراب من الفتيات مجدداً!

أدركت هنا حينها أنها لن تنال من خالو نبيل وأمثاله سواء تكلمت أو سكتت. كبرت هنا وكبر معها كفرها بكل المفاهيم والنصائح التي قدمتها برامج زياد نجيم وزافين كويومجيان الجريئة. لا تخافي، تكلمي اذا تعرضتي للضرب، العنف المنزلي أو التحرش أو الاغتصاب. لكن تجربة هنا مع السكوت والكلام باءت بالفشل. كبرت هنا ورأت بأم عينها المتحرش القذر يخطر حرّاً أمام الجميع. يأتي في العيد متوقعاً قبلة وعناقاً لخالو.ووالدتها بكل محبة وسرور تمنحه سيارتها القديمة دون مقابل، سيارتها التي أمضت معا سنوات الجامعة ومغامراتها ورحلاتها. “شافتو عم يتمختر فيها وأكيد أشكال ألوان من الأفعال العجيبة بتصير على مقاعدها يلي قعد عليها أصحاب هنا وكتبها وثيابها“.ورأت أن الجميع يتعامل مع خالو نبيل طبيعياً. لم تر أي من خالاتها تبعد ابنتها عنه.

ارتاحت “هنا” لفكرة أن خالو نبيل رجل مريض وتعيس. فقد أمه حين كان صغيرا ولم يجد من يعلمه الصح من الخطأ. واستطاعت التأقلم مع الفكرة هذه الى أن ظهر متحرش جديد في الساحة وتم التغاضي عن الموضوع والتكتم عنه كيلا ينهار “بريستيج تانت يولا” والدة المتحرّش المستجدّ. المتحرّش الذي كرّس وقته وجهده ليبرهن لفتيات العائلة الصغيرات أن للمصعد استعمال آخر، وأن للحليب مصدر آخر غير البقر وثدي“الماما“.

رأت “هنا” روؤس كبار العائلة الشامخة تنحني للمرة الثانية أمام منحرف قذر وشهدت على افلات الأخير من العقاب تماماً كما أفلت خالو نبيل ونجا بفعلته. خالو نبيل كان محظوظاً، فقد أفلت بأفعال كثيرة غير سفاح القربى. فقد كان لخالو نبيل أفعالا عديدة تصب في خانة الكذب والسرقة والنصب، الزواج والطلاق والزواج بامرأتين والاحتيال. كل “المصايب السودا” هذه ولازالت العائلة الكريمة تسدد مصاريف وديون وسندات خالو نبيل.

سنوات من العلاج النفسي السري بعد أول سنة في كلية الصحة، بيّنت لهنا أسباب مشاكل مراهقتها وما بعد المراهقة. الوزن الزائد، الزهد بكل الاشياء التي تهتمّ بها المراهقات من ملابس وألوان وحب واسرار.كان لها من الأصدقاء الكثير. وكانت لها شخصية مرحة وشعبية عالية حيثما ذهبت، لكنها لم تعرف مغامرات المراهقات الغرامية وسخرت منها. وغالباً ما تكون السخرية وسيلة للدفاع أو التهرب.

قالت لها المعالجة يوماً بعد جلسة نق على موضوع الوزن:”انت ما بدك تضعفي، خلص ما بقى تعذبي حالك ريجيم ورياضة وعمليات. جسمك رافض يكون حلو حتى ما ينعجبوا فيه الرجال. اطلّعي أساساً انت من وين بتنصحي وبتضعفي“. جملة واحدة جعلت هنا تستفيق من غفلة 26 سنة وحينها فقط فقدت هنا 20 كيلو من وزنها في سنة واحدة وأصبح لها “بوي فريند“.

تجرأت هنا وحكت قصتها لاثنين من أصدقائها. أصبحت أكثر ارتياحاً للفكرة وللتعامل معها. لم تعد تكره نفسها بالقدر ذاته. ما لم تكن هنا تدركه أن الخطأ ليس خطؤها والذنب الذي حملته لسنين ليس ذنبها.

تركت “هنا” لبنان وانتقلت للعمل في بلد عربية. نسيت هنا كل ما تعلق بخالو نبيل الى أن قالت لها والدتها خلال زيارة، أنها تريد أن تذهب الى بيت طالبة في معهد التمريض، سنة أولى، مع “أم لجين” لطلب يدها لخالو نبيل. جنّ جنون هنا ذات السابعة والعشرين وقررت أن تتشاجر مع والدتها لسبيبن: أولاً لأنها لا زالت تمدّ خالو نبيل بطغيانه وثانياً لجرأتها على اطلاع هنا على أخباره بعد فعلته. ولسخرية القدر، لم تفهم “أم هنا” معنى كلمة فعلته فأجابت ببراءة “ليش شو عملّك“. حالة الانكار الشديد جعلت “أم هنا” تمسح الموضوع من ذاكرتها وتستبدله بكلمات مليئة بالصدمة والحزن والدموع والندم والخجل: “أنا كنت مفكرة انه كان يضايقكن لما يقعد مع خطيبته قدامك انت ولجين“.

قاطعت “أم هنا” عرس خالو نبيل وقطعت عنه المصروف. اقتصر لقاؤهما على سلام جافّ. حينها بدأت هنا تحسّ بالانتصار وبفرحة عارمة لقدرتها الآن على مسامحة والدتها وتفهّمها لما مرّت به دون أن تتقبله بالضرورة.

جاء الصيف، وجاء المرح وجلسات العائلة في حديقة خالتو. حول ارغيلة تفاح للصغار وراس مدبّس “للخال الكبير، دار الحديث حول آخر أفعال خالو نبيل. بعد لحظة تفكير عميق ونظرة الى الافق، شخصت الأنظار الى“الخال الكبير“، رئيس البلدية مؤخراً، منتظرة لتلقّف الجواهر والحكم والحل لمشكلة ديون خالو نبيل. نطق الكبير اخيراً وقال: “بابا الله يرحمه وصّاني بنبيل. وانا بصراحة حاولت كتير. كلامي موجّه لالكن انتو الصبايا والشباب. أنا واخواتي ما بقا قادرين. أنا عندي حل بسيط. كل حدا منكن انتو يلي بتشتغلوا بيتبرّع بعشرين دولار بس بالشهر هيك منغطي الديون. خالكن أو عمّكن نبيل ما رح يتغيّر“.

سكت الكبير عن الكلام المباح وسقطت جواهر الكبير على هنا كدلو من الغائط. لم تمنعها هيبة الكبير من السخرية من هذا الرأي الخالي من المنطق، فهنا لن يسكتها شيء بعد الآن. نظر الكبير لهنا نظرة تعني أنه مهتم لمعرفة رأيها فقالت :”عاجلوا المشكلة من أساسها. كل ما شاف أنكم ،سوري بالكلمة،عم تمسحوا خراه، رح يضل معتمد على هالشي. أنا بعتذر يا كبير ما بدفع ولا ليرة من تعبي“. استغرب الكبير وسأل الصبايا والشباب الحاضرين. “وأنتو؟” ولدهشته رفض الجميع اقتراح الكبير مما جعل خالو صلاح “أبو ليلى” يحتدّ ويقول: “عشنا وشفنا فريخات بيربوا خالهن“. “لأ لأ لأ، اسمحلي فيها يا أبو ليلى إذا بتريد”وسردت هنا حكايتها على مسمع من سمعها من قبل ومن لم يسمعها من شبان العائلة و“الخال المغترب“.عم وجوم وصمت طويل قطعته جواهر الكبير مجدداً في الجلسة الصيفية الأنيسة. “انا يا خالو كنت مفكّر مرة واحدة جرّب وما زبطت معه“. “نعم؟؟؟؟؟ شو هالمنطق يا خالو؟” فأجاب الكبير:”منيح يلي قلتيلي يا خالو، هو ساكن بوجّ بيتنا وعندي ولاد زغار“. فابتسمت هنا وقالت :”أنا يا خالو حكيت وانتو اخترتوا انكن ما تسمعوا بس ما تخاف على البنات، كلّن بيعرفوا“.

في تلك الليلة الصيفية انحنت رؤوس العائلة الشامخة وطأطأت مجدداً، ولكنها طأطأت هذه المرّة” لهنا”.
