week three :: production roles

Role Production - Asian Film Academy

we are all collaborating in groups on projects for the remaining days of the workshop. since we have to plan + schedule it helps to have an idea of what roles each of us will play on the project. here is a breakdown of some production roles and generally what each does during pre-production, production, post production and distribution… feel free to add duties as you gain experience in each phase of production.

we are low budget so each person may fill 2 or 3 or even 4 roles in a project. For instance: i may be the production assistant during pre-production but then lighting during production and editor in post production. also some roles can be combined: set design, props, costumes, makeup and script supervisor can be the same person….

since this is a feminist project and everyone is learning something new in making a video remember to plan for switching roles so that everyone has a chance to use the camera, set the lights, think about sound and participate in editing.

plan how your production team will work — keep in mind who will do what and keep rotating responsibilities.

everyone came back with some outtakes + some great material, interesting experiences, and all the interviews demonstrated creativity + quick thinking in the field.

This week is also the beginning of finding collaborators, making working groups and moving forward on projects. Each group will spend the remaining workshop time developing, shooting, editing, and presenting a short video project of their own.

week two :: day 4 :: audio + light

in today’s session we concentrated on audio, learned some quick basics of lighting and some tips for how to deal with lighting on a low low budget project. we also covered some basics strategies for conducting a video interview.

participants had a chance to get familiar with different types of microphones: camera mic, lavalier, and shot gun. in small groups participants made field recordings of
a person, place, or thing in order to understand directionality, quality, and sensitivity of different microphones and recording devices. We came back together and shared our recordings and our experiences. highlights of the recordings :: opening and closing of a cell phone; the difference between the camera mic, a shotgun, and a small semi-uni directional mic in an interview on a street – finding out the camera mic is omni-directional; and finding out how to capture chewing with a lavalier mic. With this knowledge, everyone left the workshop ready to conduct either a street interview or a formal interview by session 5.

lighting :: key/spot light, back light and fill. this is our mantra. no matter what the situation — key, back, fill. and remember the sun is our best friend in low budget production. if we don’t have a light kit — be resourceful and creative.

“feel very free to make lots of mistakes.”

next steps:: continue to develop project ideas and think about distribution to refine your concept — who is your audience and how will you reach them. in session 5 we will make groups + keep developing our ideas and start planning for the next phase: PRODUCTION!!!

Within the framework of the exhibition Witness by Mona Hatoum, Beirut Art Center will present Hatoum’s video work Measures of Distance alongside Belgian filmmaker and artist Chantal Akerman’s News from Home. The two works deal with communication across continents between mothers and their daughters who have left home.

Measures of Distance

Measures of Distance is constructed from a series of grainy stills shot in extreme close-ups of Hatoum’s mother in the shower of the family home in Beirut. The images are overlaid with a mesh of Arabic writing, like a curtain or a veil, which represent her mother’s letters from Beirut to her in London. On the soundtrack can be heard an animated conversation between Hatoum and her mother overlaid with Hatoum’s voice reading a translation of the letters into English.
The video is concerned with the artist’s separation from her Palestinian family and in particular, her relationship with her mother.
The personal and political are inextricably bound up in a narrative that explores identity and sexuality against a backdrop of traumatic social rupture, war, exile and displacement.

Letters from Chantal Akerman’s mother are read over a series of elegantly composed shots of 1976 New York, where our (unseen) filmmaker and protagonist has relocated. Akerman’s unforgettable time capsule of the city is also a gorgeous meditation on urban alienation and personal and familial disconnection.
